Wellness and Preventative Medicine from Manzini Animal Hospital

Our focus at Manzini Animal Hospital is to help prevent disease and illness in your family's pets. Our goal is to help you minimize the need to treat and cure preventable diseases. Preventative medicine increases your pet's chances of having a long and healthy life. We accomplish this through routine annual physical examinations of your pet, proper nutrition, parasite control and the use of a vaccination program based on an individualized risk assessment for your pet.

We recommend annual examinations and in certain circumstances bi annual pet examinations as well as blood work and urine testing for all breeds and species. Certain breeds require specific testing. A shih tzu or cocker spaniel, for example, may need tear testing due to the fact they are predisposed to dry eye.  A Cavilier King Charles or Bichon Frise will need radiographs for heart diease and or bladder stones, etc. Stay tuned for more on breed specific testing.

Parasite control seems like such a small thing, but it can lead to big problems. Typically, parasitism leads to diarrhea, vomiting and general lack of thriftiness such as poor hair coat, poor organ perfusion, lack of ability to properly asborb nutrients and therefore, poor overall health.  There are some circumstances where parasitism can lead to more serious complications such as severe debilitating disease or death.  The zoonotic potential or ability to pass on parasites to humans is also a very serious concern.  Children or adults with serious health conditions or any long term illness are the most at risk.  The diseases associated with pet parasites being transmitted to humans is a serious form of eye damage or organ failure.  We recommend that your pet be wormed regularly.  That means different things for different pets.  All puppies and kittens are born with worms and worming kills some of worms but not all of the parasite's  life stages. Therefore, it is important to worm regularly.  The needs of each and every pet vary because every pets lifestyle varies. If your pet is regularly flea and worm treated with revolution/advantagemulti/trifexis/or sentinel then most of the zoonotic parasites are covered monthly and you only need to worm with a full de-wormer less frequently.  If you have questions regardiing the individual needs of your pet please contact us at 250 724 4444.
